It's simple: they have a different business plan than any other wireless provider. They don't spend millions of dollars on advertising, with newspapers, magazines, TV and radio stations, etc., like the other wireless providers do. Consequently, they're not throwing millions of dollars to the wind, hoping that some of it will "stick" and come back, in the form of new customers. Though that's the norm, it's not the most efficient way to gather customers, and it's definitely not cost-effective. Therefore, Lightyear doesn't need as much money from their customers, to cover their overhead, since they don't have as much overhead. That's why they can offer their totally Unlimited Plan for half the cost of the major providers.

Instead, they recruit a sales force of independent representatives who do their advertising for them, by word of mouth, the most potent form of advertising ever known. These are people who are actually using the service and who are in a position to talk about it from personal experience. Because these representatives receive both immediate income, for new customer acquisition, and long-term income, from commissions on their customers' monthly billings and the efforts of representatives they have recruited, they're happy to share the good news of "Free Wireless Forever" with others.

There's also another reason why Lightyear Wireless can offer "Free Wireless Forever". They extend their offer of free service to both their representatives and to their customers. No other wireless company currently offers their customers a way to earn "Free Wireless Forever". This means lots more people are spreading the word about Lightyear Wireless, at no cost to Lightyear. They have a good incentive to do so–they can help their friends and neighbors save money on their wireless costs and they can get "Free Wireless Forever" for themselves.

Let "the other guys" stay stuck in their "big business" business model. Lightyear Wireless will just keep on providing high quality wireless service at half the cost of the "big boys" and even offer it for free, for a little help from their reps and customers. That's free enterprise at work, the way it's supposed to work.
